Inspiring Future Ocean Stewards with EPA-Funded ‘Coral Reefs and You’ Program

Coral Restoration Foundation™ is dedicated to educating the public about coral reefs, our restoration work, and the impacts of human, biological, and environmental factors on coral health. Sharing this knowledge with the public empowers communities to help protect these vital ecosystems. Through outreach events throughout South Florida, we utilize effective methods of connecting with local communities, bringing awareness and understanding to issues around Florida’s Coral Reef.

Made possible by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we’re excited to expand our education efforts through the “Coral Reefs and You” program, bringing our expertise to schools throughout the Florida Keys to inspire and educate the next generation. From September through November of 2024, CRF interns have been bringing immersive lessons to science and marine science classes in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the Florida Keys. Through hands-on activities, our interns help students explore each topic in an engaging way.

"The 'Coral Reefs and You' program is designed to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards. By combining hands-on experiences with in-depth classroom learning, we’re giving students a unique opportunity to understand the critical role coral reefs play in both our environment and economy. It's our hope that these young minds will leave the program not only with knowledge, but with a deep-rooted commitment to protecting these vital ecosystems for years to come," shared Chandler Wright, Education and Outreach Coordinator at CRF.

The students will embark on an immersive educational journey with our four one-hour modules, delivered over four consecutive days. These engaging sessions dive deep into coral anatomy, ecosystem services, cutting-edge restoration methods, and the profound local socioeconomic impact of our beloved reefs. All modules are designed to meet Florida's CPALMS educational standards, Ocean Literacy Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards, ensuring a seamless integration into schools' regular curriculum.

At the end of each daily lesson, fifth, eighth, and twelfth graders each receive unique take-home activities that reinforce coral conservation, from making reef-safe sunscreen to creating ocean-themed crafts. These hands-on projects help students connect with coral ecosystems in meaningful ways.

The program will culminate in a half-day snorkeling field trip to Florida's Coral Reef. Here, students will witness the vibrant beauty of reef ecosystems up close and personal, gaining invaluable insights into ongoing restoration efforts. The opportunity for students to witness the reefs in person allows them to cultivate a personal connection with the reefs and can inspire a new awareness around the importance of preserving these reefs.

Thanks to the EPA grant, this program is set for not only to take place this fall but the next two fall seasons, ensuring that thousands of students across the Florida Keys can benefit from this valuable knowledge. By educating our community’s next generation, we’re inspiring meaningful and lasting change for the reefs right here at home.
