What is your earliest memory of the ocean?

Being a water sign, I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean. My earliest memory was when I visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium as a child. I fell in love with the ocean and its creatures instantly.

What is your favorite marine creature?

My favorite marine creature is the penguin. They have the cutest and most adorable waddle.

Have you experienced a healthy coral reef ecosystem? If so where, and how did it make you feel?

I’ve experienced a healthy coral reef ecosystem in Maui, Hawaii. It was my first time vacationing in Hawaii with my family, and we decided to go snorkeling. It was a great underwater experience! I saw live corals and fish of all different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. It made me appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of all the living creatures underwater.

What concerns or scares you the most about climate change?

What scares me most about climate change is that it affects ecosystems and communities all around the world. Climate change impacts the environment differently based on the region. We can’t afford to “wait and see” about climate change. Many resources we depend such as water and food are affected by change in temperature. As the human population adapts to climate change, others in less fortunate parts of the world will have trouble adjusting as quickly.

Why do you, personally, care about coral reefs?

Coral reefs are important to be because they are vital to our healthy ocean ecosystem. They support extraordinary biodiversity by harboring a vast amount of marine species including different types of fish, invertebrates, and sea mammals. Coral reefs are like the Amazon Rainforests of the ocean.

Why is protecting and restoring coral reefs relevant to your brand?

We only have one Earth, so we must do our best to protect it. At my workplace, BeeSure, we strive to preserve the environment and all of its aspects. To survive and live, humans take energy and resources from nature. Our basic necessities like food, water, shelter, and air are thanks to biodiversity. The greater the diversity of life, the more opportunities we have to make the world a better place. We are grateful for the trees, ocean, animals, and the overall health of our environment.

Why should the average person care about coral reefs?

The average person should care about coral reefs because they don’t only support diverse marine species but provide protection and income for the human population. Coral reefs help protect coastlines from damaging currents and waves. Coral reefs also help the economy through tourism and recreational activities like snorkeling where visitors can enjoy beautiful underwater life.

In your opinion, what are some of the most powerful tools at our disposal that we can apply to the mission to save coral reefs?

As an environmental organization, finding other organizations with the same goals is a start. Using social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter will help spread the message as well. Providing information to the average person like “what to do when visiting coral reefs guide” or “how to change your every day environmental perspective to make a bigger difference guide” is also crucial.

What do you think are some of the easiest ways that the average person can join the mission to save coral reefs from extinction?

We need to bring attention to the public. Many people have the mentality of “what I do doesn’t matter; nothing will change.” Raising awareness to others is important for them to fully understand how they are affecting and being affected. Awareness can be spread through educational and social events.

Do you think there is hope for our coral reefs? Why?

Yes, I think there is hope for our coral reefs just like there is still hope for our environment. It all starts with small actions to make a very big impact.
